The
Stud-Book
- part 3 |
Although there are photographs of
many of the principal stallions of early years, the mares are not so well
documented. This was probably because they were rearing foals and not
handled so much. Of the hundreds of mares registered in the first few
volumes, few figure in today's pedigrees to any great extent. There is a
common misconception that the small Shetlands are a modern fashion but, in
fact, the Londonderry stud bred large and small ponies, which, although
predominantly black, were of various colours. Oman 33 (34" brown) was by
Prince of Thule and out of a granddaughter of Jack 16. Pineapple 35 (34"
brown) and Wynyard Flash 632 (34" brown) were also combinations of Prince
of Thule and Jack. All were bred at the Londonderry stud. Other breeders
purchasing ponies from Lord Londonderry, chose differing types and sizes
to use in their own studs, so today, a wide variation has evolved from the
same stock. |
Hoplemuroma 130
(pedigree unknown), a roan
of
35½"with the Ladies Hope. She was an
accomplished harness pony, often beating ponies
considerably larger than

Londonderry, she
was by Lord of the Isles 26 out of
Swertha 211 who was by Odin 32 out of

|
Bretta 811 (35") bred

parents
were by Jack 16. Bretta was an influential brood
mare at the
Londonderry stud. |

Through Earlshall lines, she was responsible for
many of the Marshwood "B" line ponies.

was a consistent prize winner. She had numerous
crosses of Jack 16. |
Belle of the Ball 2333 (37") Bred by the Ladies E. &

|

Café au Lait 886
(33½"), bred by John Laurenson
was a dun skewbald. She brought the dun and pied colouring to the South
Park stud. Most of our miniature Shetlands trace to her. She was by Lodinn,
a dun stallion by Lord of the Isles 26. Two of her descendants, Ferdinand
& Cuckoo are on the preceding page. |
