The Stud-Book - part 3

Although there are photographs of many of the principal stallions of early years, the mares are not so well documented. This was probably because they were rearing foals and not handled so much. Of the hundreds of mares registered in the first few volumes, few figure in today's pedigrees to any great extent. There is a common misconception that the small Shetlands are a modern fashion but, in fact, the Londonderry stud bred large and small ponies, which, although predominantly black, were of various colours. Oman 33 (34" brown) was by Prince of Thule and out of a granddaughter of Jack 16. Pineapple 35 (34" brown) and Wynyard Flash 632 (34" brown) were also combinations of Prince of Thule and Jack. All were bred at the Londonderry stud. Other breeders purchasing ponies from Lord Londonderry, chose differing types and sizes to use in their own studs, so today, a wide variation has evolved from the same stock.
